The annual Portland Rose Festival…
Has been a huge part of Portland, Oregon’s pop culture for the last century. In the early part of the 20th-century city leaders developed the festival to put Portland on the map and unofficially brand the city the “summer capital of the world.” Those city leaders could not have imagined how huge this festival would ultimately become.
World famous for its award-winning events and artistic pageantry, this festival is now known as Portland’s “Official Annual Parade.” Dozens of events are held which focus on the diverse interests and culture of the community. The three-weekend urban fair is steep in tradition, full of great entertainment, food and features.
Opening day of the Portland Rose Festival marks the first sign of summer for the locals. People come from across the city and nearby towns to enjoy and celebrate the events that happen during May and June each year. From festival rides to cotton candy and parade floats, the event has something for festival goers of all ages.
This year’s events include:
The Rose City Sing-Off. This A cappella competition for high school-age singers in the Northwest is a premier annual event. The competition provides youth the opportunity to perform and be judged by three professional judges who provide feedback and one-on-one coaching.
The Annual Spring Rose Show. Held each year at the Lloyd Center, the annual show is the largest and longest-running of its kind in the nation. Rose growers from across the Pacific Northwest participate to see who will receive top honors for the most beautiful roses.
The Parades. The festival includes three parades: the Grand Floral Parade, the Starlight Parade, and the Junior Parade. Each parade is unique, offering different themes and floats to entertain guests.
The Grand Floral Float Showcase. This is the perfect opportunity for visitors to see the parade floats up close.
The Character Clown Corps. One of the festival favorites, the Character Clown Corps brings a touch of the Big Top to the Rose Festival. The Clowns participate in the Grand Floral Parade as well as many other events, bringing cheer and laughter to all involved.
Each of the events offers a unique experience for locals and visitors to connect with the Portland community. A full listing of festival events can be found online at rosefestival.org.
